The particularity of this music is that the songs did not convey any particular meaning. It was just meant to entertain people and make them dance. Above all, the promoters of this music, a group of singers and business men called jet 7 led by the late charismatic and famous singer DOUK SAGA used to distribute considerable amount of money during their performances. Given the particularities of this though well-loved trend, music specialists and many other people in the country saw it as a killing of the music because for them, such music could not be considered as one. Even the singers were said to be swindlers as people wondered about the origin of the money they spend so much each time they appear in public and also the so much expensive clothes and luxury cars they had. But despite the criticism COUPE DECALE has conquered the youth of COT D`IVOIRE so much that there cannot be a serious ceremony nor activity of the youth without associating the COUPE DECALE singers or at least play their music. In addition nearly all the West African countries and even countries well afar like France have adopted the COUPE DECALE. Today the best and famous singers of COTE D`IVOIRE are COUPE DECALE singers. Among them we can cite ARAFAT DJ, DJ LEWIS, DEBORDO, and JEAN JACQUES KOUAME…with new concepts within the COUPE DECALE. This music we can say has given a true identity to the Ivorian modern music after ZOUGLOU, a kind of music of complaint and freedom created by some Ivorian students in the 1990`s.

Culture is what remains when one has lost everything. This old saying is quite justified with the history of the Ivorian current musical trend COUPE DECALE. In fact in 2002 Cote d`ivoire was attacked by armed rebels and the following was a dreadful war that separated the country into two. It was during this war that some Ivorian young living in France created a concept called COUPE DECALE literally meaning cut and run. It was both a life style and a musical trend. Its key message is JOY and YOUTH RESPONSIBILITY. |
